Hudson County, NY – According to a report by The New York Daily News, A Jamaican woman who illegally reentered the United States seeking refuge from an uncle who raped her in Jamaica has been in ICE custody at Hudson County jail for a year and a half – due to the growing gridlock in the city’s immigration court.
The 42-year-old mother of two who The Daily News has not named because she is a rape victim, has been in jail since May 4, 2017.
According to court documents, she illegally reentered the U.S. around 2011 after being deported twice because she’d been raped and tortured for months by an uncle in rural Jamaica in 2008. She claimed that she reentered the US illegally because she heard that her uncle was searching for her.
She was arrested at her home last year as part of a roundup of undocumented immigrants according to her lawyer, Craig Relles.

Immigration Judge Lauren Farber ruled in June that the woman was credible and that she should not be deported. But the government appealed and so she remains in detention until her case is heard again.
For now, she has to speak with her daughter’s on the phone aged 10 and 17 who have been struggling in school since the arrest.
